A Night Out

Jane had reached the top stair and then she turned around.  She looked down on Tom looking up.  It was warm in the stairwell and the grand hall Tom stood in was white all around on the floor.  The floor was marble.

The stairwell was lit and the wall on one side was as the balustrades below.  The light came from the Grand Room and in the light of the Grand Room, Jane had pulled on the handrail.  Her hand was lit up and back, up and back.  And then it was shadowed when she placed it in the shadow of a balustrade.

The last step had brought her to the last step of her climb and she turned around in one motion.  Her hand pulled her around.  It was a push off the baluster.  Tom breathed in.

The light in the Grand Room flickered and the light in the stairwell flickered.

"Tom?"
"Yes?"
"Go and wait for me in the parlor."
"Yes."

He turned to go and he looked up again a little and she was still there at the top step and he felt ashamed.

The parlor was red.  It smelled of perfume and flowers and Tom looked around him.  In the parlor, there were books on one shelf the length of the wall and he looked into the glass jar standing upright on the table before him and in it was a marble.  Only one marble was in it.

It was quiet in the parlor and in the next room was a mess.  It was the drawing room.  In the drawing room were several easels and a stool stood behind one.  Tom felt his way in and he sat down on the stool.  A painting of the country side was exposed before him.  He had seen the view from the house.

Tom looked out into the night; he stood in the parlor.  He had poured himself a drink and it stood on the bar behind him.  He stepped out from the bar and Jane came down the steps.  She was at the door and he turned.

"How?  What light through yonder window breaks?" he stated.

She stood at the door and her face turned red and Tom blushed too.  She walked away from where she stood and she closed the door to the drawing room.  It was a french door on one side that she closed.  The other side was already shut.

"Are you ready to go?" she asked.
"Yes," Tom answered.

She moved to switch off the lights and Tom went out the door into the Grand Room by the hall at the foot of the stairwell.  His drink stood on the bar in the red parlor.  It was dark in there and she came out after.

The thick oak panel door shut tightly behind them, fitting into the frame, and Tom stepped off the porch into the night.  Jane locked the door and came down the steps.  They turned to go out into the night.
